I’m pretty new to Ubuntu, but I use vim a lot on Windows.

What’s the proper procedure if I’m running 6.4 vim on ubuntu? Do I uninstall vim 6.4 first, and then install 7.0 or leave 6.4 in place and install on top.

Please disregard my complaint about the repository!
The problem is I have amd64, so that’s why synaptic went crazy.
Just headed over to http://www.freshnet.org/debian/dapper-amd64/vim/ and dowloaded the deb files, and did:

sudo dpkg -i vim-ruby_7.0-017+7_amd64.deb vim-gui-common_7.0-017+7_all.deb vim-runtime_7.0-017+7_all.deb vim-common_7.0-017+7_amd64.deb vim-runtime_7.0-017+7_all.deb

and now I have vim 7!!!

I had successfully registered the repository and successfully installed vim 7 on a number of ubuntu machines a few weeks ago.
Today I registered the repository on a new machine, and the result was, after refreshing synaptic, that it offered to uninstall the ubuntu desktop and update gaim data; but nothing on vim except docs.
Could you please chack the repository?

You want the space when you insert into the /etc/apt/sources.list just as above:

“deb http://www.freshnet.org/debian/ dapper/”

There IS a space b/w “debian/” and “dapper/”

Then you will see it works

The above address is incorrect, at least according to the address bar.

Apparently, it should be:

http://www.freshnet.it/debian/dapper/vim7/

but adding this line to sources.list does not work; same error as above; no spaces in url; must I add something AFTER the url?
